What are AD remote management tools?
In small environments with a few computers and users, managing multiple users can be done manually. Active Directory (AD) is a service created to control and manage user accounts in large computer networks. IT professionals often rely on AD to manage hundreds of permissions, users, and groups across their organization’s many servers, computers, and other devices. After admins set up policies on a central server, AD will automatically perform user authentication and group-based access control, making it an essential tool for any IT professional, whether they work with Windows or Linux systems.
While Windows Server has Active Directory Domain Services command-line tools built-in, admins often rely on user-friendly third-party AD remote management tools to expand their remote server administration capabilities and get the most out of AD. Admins can keep data up to date, manage extended attribute data (such as company logos or user profile photos), manage multiple Active Directory domains, and enforce security best practices like updating passwords periodically by using AD remote management tools. Plus, remote server administration tools enable IT professionals to export Active Directory data, integrate with public clouds, and enforce and monitor user, group, and access control policies. Best of all, admins can perform these tasks from a centralized location.
Why is remote AD management useful?
Your IT environment is constantly changing, making managing your organization’s users and accounts with Active Directory challenging. As employees move between various departments, are hired, or leave the organization, you’ll need to update their user accounts, user groups, and organizational units. Manually keeping all this data up-to-date can be time-consuming, particularly in large computing environments. Remote AD management simplifies the process of managing users and accounts, enabling admins to remotely edit group policies, unlock or lock user accounts, and reset passwords from a centralized management console.
With remote AD management tools, you no longer have to waste time switching between different computers to manage various AD domains. Instead, Active Directory remote administration tools enable you to manage several domains from a single console. You can apply policies to various groups of user accounts and computers from this centralized, remote location, enabling you to put your time and energy to better use. Plus, you’ll be able to complete bulk Active Directory object exports and seamlessly integrate extended attributes into Active Directory, no tedious or manual processes required.
If you or other employees within your organization work from home or remotely, remote AD management will be particularly helpful in giving you control over your Active Directory and your employees’ user accounts. Using a remote Active Directory management tool will enable you to easily create and apply policies for remote workers, configure, check, or revoke remote access and login permissions, handle access, password, or account lockout problems, and more.
How to monitor Active Directory remotely with DRS
You can easily create, delete, update, and view properties for users, groups, containers, and organizational units remotely in your Active Directory environment with Dameware Remote Support (DRS). You won’t need to log in to your Active Directory Server to do so. Dameware Remote Support will automatically show all your Active Directory objects if the computer you’re using is part of the domain where Active Directory is installed.
To create a new organizational unit, user, or group, start by expanding Active Directory in the browser and clicking Active Directory Users and Computers. Then, click Users before right-clicking a user object. Finally, select New and pick User, Group, or Organizational Unit.
Deleting a user account is as simple as finding the account in the Users folder beneath Active Directory, right-clicking it, and selecting the Delete button. You can choose the Account button after right-clicking on a user account if you want to reset the user’s password, disable their account, or enable their account.
You can also easily view an object’s properties and create, move, or delete mailboxes with Dameware Remote Support. To view an object’s properties, right-click on the object and select Properties. If you want to create, move, or delete a mailbox, right-click on the object. Then, click Exchange Tasks.
How does AD remote management work in Dameware Remote Support?
Dameware Remote Support (DRS) is a user-friendly remote support software solution designed to simplify and accelerate the process of performing IT administration tasks remotely. Dameware Remote Support offers remote Smart Card authentication and the Dameware Mini Remote Control, a tool allowing you to easily, remotely connect to Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X computers. Once connected, you’ll be able to chat, perform file transfers, and capture screenshots. Plus, with centralized deployment mode, you’ll be able to manage users, groups, and permissions, share global host lists with your colleagues, and activate Dameware licenses from a single, centralized location.
If you’ve ever used traditional single-password authentication methods, you’ve probably needed to remember several individual passwords and use them each time you access a resource, which can be tedious. Dameware Remote Support can offer a single sign-on for Active Directory for those using centralized deployment mode, enabling the users to authenticate several applications with just one password. To take advantage of Dameware Remote Support’s single sign-on functionality, you’ll need to install and configure the Dameware Central Server.
Use the Dameware Central Server Console's import wizard capabilities for one-time imports or cyclic synchronization of important data of Active Directory accounts and groups you can manage.
When you open the Active Directory Synchronization Manager and click Refresh, you’ll be able to see your new synchronization, when the last synchronization was, and its status. To synchronize different groups at different intervals on different Active Directory servers, create separate Active Directory synchronization profiles. Once the synchronization is complete, you can go to your user screen to find a list of users in the group you’ve just synchronized. Then, launch Dameware Remote Support or Mini Remote Control, select Windows Authentication, and click Connect to Server to finish connecting via single sign-on.
Using single sign-on with Active Directory integration isn’t the only benefit Dameware Centralized Mode offers. Dameware Centralized Mode is ideal for organizations with complex IT departments and are responsible for supporting many systems. If your organization has a centralized IT department but supports multiple locations or wants to manage several Dameware products from a single location, Dameware Centralized Mode can also help. Plus, if you have Dameware Remote Support licenses, you’ll be able to safely and remotely access Windows computers from an iOS or Android mobile device. You’ll be able to remotely access powered-off or sleeping systems—even if they're outside of your firewall—and remotely start or stop services, copy or delete files, clear event logs, and reboot systems across your organization without a VPN. You can even run Dameware Mini Remote Control with the command line and integrate Dameware Remote Support with SolarWinds Web Help Desk® to accelerate and improve IT support.
